Justice Involved Mental Health 101

May 10, 2021

Presented by Marcelo Cavalheiro, LMFT & David Heffon, NHA

Working with those that are Justice Involved and requiring mental health treatment requires a knowledge base on historical impacts that have led many to incarceration from structural racism within state and federal policies to the philosophical framework of prisons from Foucault. Bringing this to the present day, Telecare implements Recovery Centered Clinical Systems  (RCCS)  as  a  guide  for  the  treatment  of  individuals  with  serious  mental  illness  and substance  use  disorders  who  are  returning  to  their  communities  after  many  years  in  prison environments. Within this framework, we focus on the program culture as a primary intervention to  help  facilitate  recovery.  By  shifting  the  program  culture  to  address  criminogenic  needs, powerful relationships and environments for change can occur, which in turn result in significant reductions in recidivism. There will be opportunities throughout the training for reflection and discussion as to how to make these changes within yourself and your program community.
